Terror in Seyland

Sarah Jameel

Welcome to the continent of Bengalia. Bengalia is a continent that is located between the Frussian Sea and Kite’s Ocean. Although the definition of the extent of the Bengalian Continent has changed over centuries, it generally includes Phunkistan, Rockdia, Souldagesh, Tempol and the island of Seyland, which is located east of the continent. With a population of ~1.7 billion, the continent takes the form of a peninsular-like region.
However, the continent is delineated to resemble a diamond, by the Karakas mountain ranges that border southern Souldagesh and and northwestern Phunkistan, and the Rockyourway hills of northern Rockdia, and the Phunkyn ranges that divide the northeastern part of Phunkistan. Seyland rocky terrain, the Edenic passes that is clustered in the centre of the country.
Phunkistan is the hegemon in the region and is the only country with an open nuclear program. The program is set up in an offshore base on the island of Hirosaki, which is a small island off the southwest coast of Seyland. Phunkistan is also an Islamic State and is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. It is one of the fastest-growing major economies; it is considered a newly industrialized country. However, it continues to face the challenges of poverty, corruption, malnutrition, inadequate public healthcare, and terrorism. Phunkistan is a pluralistic, multilingual, and a multicultural society.
Rockdia is also a nuclear state, however, its nuclear program was only declared in the last five years.Buddhist Republic of Rockdia it is the sixth most populous country. Rockdia is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of four provinces and four federal territories. It is an ethnically and linguistically diverse country. It is a regional and middle power, and has the fourth largest standing armed forces in the world. It is also a nuclear power as well as a declared nuclear-weapons state, and the second in Bengalia, to have that status. It has a semi-industrialized economy with a well-integrated agriculture sector. It is also characterized among the emerging and growth-leading economies of the world.
Souldagesh, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Souldagesh, has a population of approximately 27 million. The mountainous south has eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including the highest point on Earth, Point Soul. A monarchy throughout most of its history, Souldagesh was ruled by the King Kong dynasty of kings from 1768. After a decade-long Civil War involving the Communist Party of Souldagesh, and several weeks of mass protests by all major political parties, Souldageshis overwhelmingly favored the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a federal multiparty representative democratic republic. Ranked very low on the Human Development Index (HDI), it is one of the least developed nations in the entire world.
Tempol, officially known as the People's Republic of Tempol, is a country located on the fertile Bengal delta in Bengalia. It has the world's eighth-largest population with more than 160 million people, also making it one of the world's most densely populated countries. Following years of political exclusion, ethnic and linguistic discrimination, and economic neglect by the politically dominant western wing, a surge of popular agitation, nationalism and civil disobedience led in 1971 to the Tempol Liberation War, resulting in the separation of the region from Souldagesh and the formation of an independent Tempol. After independence, the new state proclaimed a secular multiparty democracy. The country then endured decades of poverty, famine, political turmoil and numerous military coups. Since the restoration of democracy in 1991, the country has experienced relative calm and economic progress, though its main political parties remain polarized. It has been identified as a Next Eleven economy.
And finally, Seyland or officially known as the officially the Democratic Republic of Seyland is an island country, whose geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road. Having been under the influence of the Portuguese, Dutch and French, it gained independence in 1960. It is a republic and a unitary state governed by a presidential system. It is the world's largest exporter of Coltan, with the United States as its largest trading partner. It is also the only country in Bengalia that is currently rated 'high' on the Human Development Index.
Seyland has been in has been plagued by decades of violence. Thousands have been displaced or died as a result of the bloody conflict between the Seyland Government and the Free Jundals Militia. Recent UN reports estimate that since the inception of the conflict in 1989, 400,000 persons have been immediately affected.
Seyland is made of five districts; Palinom, Quebenzi, Ontapion, New Grossland and Trinidad. The capital city, Kiriban is in the district of Ontapion. The conflict has been rooted in the mining of coltan in the district of Trinidad. Coltan is a mineral used to manufacture capacitors used in electronic products. Seyland contributes approximately 71% of global tantalum supply, with its largest trading partner being the United States.
Seyland privatized its mining industry after its independence from the French in 1960. However, due to exploitation of workers, corruption and unsafe working conditions, including the use of child labour, the Jundal mine in south east Trinidad was shut down abruptly by the Government in 1989. Workers were laid off, the administration was changed and the corporations had to move out. In 1990, the Government passed a regulation to standardize working conditions and also ensure employment to farmers from neighbouring districts.
For individuals living within the Trinidad district, mining has always been the easiest source of income available, as the work is consistent and regular, even if just for 10 Bon a day (~US $1). A recent study by the Harvard Anthropologist Doncha Wantus states that in Seyland "about 90% of young men are engaged in mining activities, even though coltan is laborious to mine, as it takes around 3 days in March into the forests to scratch out the ore with hand tools and pan it"
In June of 1990, after the passing of the "Ethical Coltan Mining Act" by Parliament in Kiriban, the then Governor of Trinidad announced the new regulations to his people in a town hall meeting.
During the meeting he was assassinated by a group of armed gunmen. In a blurry YouTube video that surfaced later that day, these men stated that their modus operandi of fighting back for the rights of the workers in the Jundal mine who were laid off, and to regain their freedom.
Since then, this group that call themselves the Free Jundals Militia or FDM have carried out a campaign of violence against the state, particularly targeting policemen and also moderate Trinidad politicians who attempted a dialogue with the government.
This is the status quo. From now on you pick a side and play your way to writing the history of Seyland. Which side will you pick?
The fate of Seyland depends on you. Your mission starts now. May the odds be ever in your favour.
